This is one of the few books I read in my life that I had to pause at times while reading, as the intensity of the story and of the images was too strong to handle. The thoughts and feelings the book instilled in me were deep and powerful. Whatever I considered as difficulties in my life became peanuts for a while and I ended up in awe of what human potential, determination and resilience may achieve against unthinkable adversity. Although it was practically impossible for me not to take sides following Tara’s story, the book sheds light on some highly sensitive beliefs and practices in many families and communities not only in the US, but in many other parts of the world where dogma is worth following blindly, irrespective of the suffering and sacrifices it entails for those it was supposed to serve.
